Trip from Bangalore to madikeri

Morning meet with our representative and then we will drive to the beautiful hill station Madikeri, the district headquarters of Coorg (Kodagu). It was previously known as Muddurajakeri which was named after the first ruler Mudduraja from this place since 1681, later it became Madikeri. It is the most picturesque town of Coorg having lots of picnic spots in and around. It is very popular hill station among the tourist. It is situated at an altitude of 1061 mt which features a tropical highland climate and lies in the Western Ghats. Madikeri is often referred to as the Scotland of India for its very beautiful hill station with mild climate during the summer. For its scenic spots sometimes referred to as Mini Kashmir. This morning we will go on a half day excursion around Madikeri visiting The Madikeri Palace or Fort, Omkareshwar Temple, Raja's seat, Abbi etc, which are located in very close vicinity. First we will visit Raja's seat – locate just 1 ½ km from Madikeri, this is one of the most enchanting place in Madikeri, and once it was the preferred place of recreation for the Rajas and hence was permanently associated with them. It is built on a high level ground with a commanding view of the cliffs and valleys to the west. Once can have the enchanting views of the sunrise and sunset from here. Later we will drive to visit the Abbi falls - located around 8 kms from the town of Madikeri, is situated between coffee plantations, spice estates and green trees where several streams join from the mountains and gush down to join the Kaveri River. Abby cascades 70 ft down to flow as a small river and the falls appear suddenly, the water cascading over rocks into calm pools. Enjoy the gushing, roaring beauty but a desire to take a dip in the cool waters may prove to be risky. While returning we will visit Omkareshwar temple – it is located just 1 km from the heart of the Madikeri. In 1820 a significant building built by Linga Rajendra was Omkareshwara temple. It has both Islamic and Gothic style of architecture. There is a tank in front of the temple & a footpath leading to a small "Mantap". According to the legends, the Shiva Lingam worshipped in the temple has been imported from the sacred city of Varanasi. The Madikeri Palace or Fort – the palace of the erstwhile kings located inside the Madikeri For and now it houses the offices of the Deputy Commissioner of Coorg. The museum inside the fort is run by the state archaeology department. The museum is a source of many antiques of Coorg. The original mud fort was rebuilt in stone by Tipu Sultan. Two life-size elephants made of mortar. Once can also visit the Mahatma Gandhi Public Library, the Kote Maha Ganapathi temple and the district prison all are located inside the fort. Today after breakfast we will enjoy the half day excursion to visit the ruins of Hampi. Later return to the Hospet. Hampi, the seat of the famed Vijayanagara Empire was the capital of the largest empire in post-moghul India, covering several states. The Vijayanagaraempire stretched over at least three states -Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh. The destruction of Vijayanagar by marauding Moghul invaders was sudden, shocking and absolute. Although in ruins today, this capital city once boasted riches known far beyond the shores of India. The ruins of Hampi of the 14th Century lies scattered in about 26 sq. km area, amidst giant boulders and vegetation. Protected by the tempestuous river Tungabhadra in the north and rocky granite ridges on the other three sides, the ruins silently narrate the story of grandeur splendor and fabulous wealth. The splendid remains of palaces express a tale of man's infinite talent and power of creativity together with his capacity for senseless destruction. A visit to Hampi is a sojourn into the past. Most of the important structures and ruins are located in two areas, which are generally referred to as the Royal Centre and the Sacred Centre. A visit to Anegundi village by traversing the gushing Tungabhadra river on a coracle is an experience that provides the guests with a glimpse into the traditional country life in Karnataka. Situated in the southern state of Karnataka, Chikmagalur literally means "The town of the younger daughter" in the native Kannada language. The town is said to have been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakrepatna and hence the name. Chikmagalur was the first place that coffee was first cultivated in India. Rivers like Tunga and Bhadra have their sources in the mountains here which are part of the Western Ghats. On the way to Chikmagalur, we will visit the ruins of Belur in Hassan district. Belur is famous for its magnificent Hoysala Temple Complex. The Chennakesava Temple here is the major attraction, built by Hoysala Vishnuvardhana, to commemorate his victory over the Cholas. The facade of the temple is filled with intricate sculptures with no portion left blank. It is the only Hoysala Temple still in active worship. Further continue drive to Chikmagalur. Today after breakfast, we will visit Mullayangiri for its breathtaking view. Mullayanagiri is part of the Baba Budangiri Hill Ranges here. It stands 1930 meters tall and is the tallest peak in Karnataka. Its height is famous mostly for watching sunsets from. It is 16 km from Chikmagalur town. Driving to Mullayanagiri is worth taking a risk. On the way is Sitalayanagiri where the water in the Shiva temple neither increases nor decreases. The road to Mullayanagiri is very narrow with views from steep cliffs. Driving to the peak is not possible and includes a trek up the hill from the halfway point. There is a small temple on top of the hill. From the topmost point of the hill, the Arabian sea is visible on clear days. The small hillock in the temple compound is the highest point in Karnataka. The narrow road to the temple makes two-way traffic impossible. It is a great trekking spot in Karnataka. Later return to the resort for lunch. Optional: One may opt for its enchanting waterfalls like Kallathigiri Falls and Hebbe Falls while staying in Chikmagalur. Kallathigiri Falls, also known as Kalahasti falls is a fall that cascades down from the top of the Chandra Drona hill from a height of 122 meters amidst fascinating scenery. There is an old Veerabhadra temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, constructed in a gap between rocks. This temple can be approached after crossing the waterfall. Hebbe Falls, in this beautiful waterfall the water streams down from a height of 168 meters in two stages to form Dodda Hebbe (Big Falls) and Chikka Hebbe (Small Falls).

The Palace is a treasure house of exquisite carvings and works of art from all over the world. Chamundi Hills - A well-known 335 mt high landmark, Chamundi Hill can be reached by a 13 km road or by climbing up the 1,000 steps laid out by the Mysore Maharaja in the 17th century. Brindavan Gardens - Located at the KR Sagar Dam, Brindavan Gardens is one of the best gardens in South India. Spread over 150 acres, Brindavan Gardens has since the 1960s provided the backdrop for many Indian films. Special attractions include the Dancing Fountains. Mysore Zoo - The Zoo was set up under royal patronage in the 19th century. Its fauna includes rare and exotic species that are housed in lush, green surroundings. The Zoo is famous for breeding some very rare animals in captivity. For art lovers, there is The Art Gallery - The Jaganmohan Palace was converted into an art gallery in 1875 and exhibits paintings that date back to that period. After lunch we will again get ready for wildlife exploration & birding within the periphery of the national park.
